Fishtown Bathroom
Client: Jethro Heiko
Location: Fishtown, Philadelphia
Open-minded and kind, the clients for this job were committed to building a bathroom entirely of salvage. With the dedicated help of Linda at Restore, and Bob and Chris at Provenance, we managed to get our hands on Carrera marble from the ballroom of the historic Divine Lorraine Hotel in Philadelphia for the floor tile and baseboard. Subway tiles came from St. Joseph's Seminary in Philadelphia, the apron for the sink was built from bowling alley from the Union League in Philadelphia, and the cast-iron built-in tub from a Philadelphia home. The base was custom built by Andy Upright, and the sink was crafted Philadelphia's clay genius Liz Kinder. The glass towel rack was from the Lorraine, the door was poplar with frosted glass from a house on the Philadelphia Main Line, and the built-in shower shelves were from Lorraine marble. About the only thing that wasn't salvaged in this bathroom, aside from the fixtures, was the toilet and sheetrock.
This job was a labor of love. Thankfully, we had the house to ourselves – which was helpful when we needed to get the 650-pound bathtub up the stairs by attaching a come-along to a timber braced between a window. What we started with and what we ended with are two different beasts, and gives evidence to the (ironic) transformative powers of salvage – taking out new work and using old materials to create something utterly original and unique.
Client Testimonial
"The bathroom is great, I wish I wasn't getting used to it but every time someone sees it for the first time they are so impressed. It really is an amazing bathroom."
