Overbrook Bathroom

Client: Marcia Levinson
Location: Overbrook Hills, Philadelphia

Marcia began with a bathroom that required doors for a medicine cabinet, shelves, vanity sinks, and panels for her drop-in jacuzzi tub. The panels needed to be detachable, so that marcia could gain access to the motor and plumbing of the tub. She also wanted storage space beneath the tub.

We first tackled the tub. Together, Marcia and i purchased salvaged doors from Provenance that came from the Pennsylvania School for the Dumb & Blind, as it was called then. I ripped the doors down to the appropriate height, put on the proper bevels, and used magnets on the studs and the back of the doors to attach the panels to the framing. The molding was bought new; although it looks like one piece, the bottom molding actually slips beneath the trim attached to the tiles.

We built the medicine cabinets using cutoffs from the doors, as well as oak trim that Marcia had cleverly salvaged from her victorian stone house.

The shelves I made from section of the bowling alleys from the union league. The wood is a combination of maple and southern yellow pine. The shelves are suspended steel braided wire crimped and screwed with an eye-hook into the wall framing.

The dresser and sinks were Marcia's idea. Certain drawers needed to be taken out for the plumbing, and we used magnets on the drawer front to keep the look of a dresser on the facade. We hung the mirror behind the sink to give the bathroom its finishing touch.

Client Testimonial

"The outcome of this bathroom was a collaborative effort – I appreciated Brendan going along with my 'not knowing' and creating along with me.  The bathroom is truly unique, and I feel like with Brendan's help, the end product expresses a lot of me. I couldn't have done it without him...He took my ideas and put them into form. With his willingness to do something different and finding a way to do it, we came up with a cool, satisfying and beautiful result."
