Born in Colorado, Brendan was raised in downtown Philadelphia. In 1997 he moved to Alaska, and in 2005 he joined Local Carpenter's Union 1281 in southeast Alaska. He has also worked on barn-building, framing and finish carpentry crews in California, Kentucky, and Michigan. Brendan spent a year as a timber framer in New Hampshire at Bensonwood Woodworking, building Homes in Nantucket, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
Brendan studied at Columbia and Oxford Universities, graduating from Oxford with a B.A. and M.A. in French and English literature. In 2006 Brendan returned to Philadelphia to start Greensaw.
