Society Hill Table
Client: Kathy Gosliner & Joe Lurie
Location: Society Hill, Philadelphia
This table was designed using three salvaged pieces: a galvanized tin cornice from a Philadelphia building; a section of bowling alley from the Philadelphia Union League, and a door from a Philadelphia home.
The tin cornice was first slice in two, using tin snips and a reciprocating saw. The sharp edges were grinded down to prevent injury. A triangular frame was created inside the cornice, fastened together with SDS screws. The protruding heads of the screws were grinded off.
The section of bowling alley was selected from a larger piece, taking advantage of the point where the maple met the southern yellow pine. an angled section was ripped off the wood stock to complement the shape of the cornice. The piece was accented with the laminate trimmer, and placed on top of the framing.
Two sections of the door were cut, with their edges beveled at forty-five degrees. these created the back and side of the table. The scroll work of the cornice was tacked with metal nails to the body of the table, highlighting the oxidized gray-blues, violets, and chalk-whites of the tin.
