Woodcock Garden

Client: Rob & Anne Woodcock
Location: Graduate Hospital Area, Philadelphia

When Anne Woodcock first contacted us, she made it clear that this job would require a certain amount of creativity. The work fell somewhere between landscaping and carpentry. She and her husband Rob wanted to build to build garden planters from large timbers, build two movable planters, and construct a fence around the perimeter of the yard.

We had recently finished a salvage job at a church four blocks away. Over fifty hemlock joists had been removed. So we said we'd give a shot building the planters out of these, and make the fence out of pre-fabricated sections of yellow cedar.

It should be mentioned that Anne's husband Rob Woodcock is a master gardener, and I think we were all a little intimidated. But we managed to put our heads together and come up with a design for the planters where we would sheath the interior with Trex synthetic decking, and use a non-toxic timber oil on the out side surface.

Our work was abetted by Rob offering us cups of tea and very good coffee shipped over from Sainsburys in England. He was also quick to pick up a shovel to help spread sand, gravel, or dirt. We built the planters, the fence, two swinging doors for the fence, leveled out the yard, and installed local Pennsylvania blue stone. The job came out beautifully, and we're still waiting for the the beer party Rob promised us...

Client Testimonial

"We recently hired Greensaw Design LLC to help transform our bare back yard into an outdoor space where we could entertain and generally relax and get away from the stresses of the week. A small space, we had a good idea of what we wanted, but Brendan and his team surpassed our expectations. Their craftsmanship and problem-solving was a joy to experience. They involved us in every step of the project in a way that made us feel part of the finished product; this is exactly what we were hoping for.

As well as buiding they sourced local materials that could be re-used for our purposes. The hemlock beams were salvaged from a nearby church and are a great addition to the garden, providing large raised beds to work, along with the matching planters for vegetables. The hemlock saloon style door onto the storage area was an afterthought and executed beautifully. With space constraints the back gate had to open outwards and fully and was solved ingeniously.

The guys themselves were hard-working and completely self-sufficient but were also great fun to work with. There was a real sense that they enjoyed the project and enjoyed the problem-solving it demanded.

I would certainly recommend Greensaw Design to anyone who wants great craftsmanship and dependability, however involved they want to be."
