Alexandria Kitchen
Client: Boyd Walker
Location: Alexandria, VA
This kitchen, built in the dog days of summer, in the southern heat, broke us Yankees. Not far from the Confederate capital, Alexandria was a comfortable place to live, with our most generous client Boyd Walker providing board on the venerable King Street.
We had already laid and finished heartpine floors salvaged from a church in Philadelphia (see salvage pics). We arrived this time with a butler's pantry from a Philadelphia house, and about five hundred board feet of three quarter and inch-thick reclaimed white pine, complete with the oxidized lag bolt and nail holes. A week later, and about ten pounds lighter each of us, the kitchen was done. We hung the cantilevered open shelves with steel wire, and built the countertop from the thicker material. We used European hinges on the doors, and the metal brackets were custom-forged by Andy Upright. The dog got lost and located by the pound (for the second time) on this job, but we left George Washington's birthplace with a kitchen built from wood harvested before his birth.
Client Testimonial
"Brendan Jones and his crew from Greensaw Design & Build did an excellent job completing my project in Alexandria. The crew showed a genuine interest...figuring out how the new elements would fit in with the old."
