Art Museum Area Kitchen Renovation 2
Client: Scott & Jerilyn Dressler
Location: Fairmount, Philadelphia
Project Manager: Dave Wing
Slide out Scott's knife drawer and you know you are dealing with a serious cook. It makes sense then, I suppose, that we used pews from a Protestant church to build the cabinets for Scott and Jerilyn.
While the backs of the pews appeared straight, a heavy finish, coupled with years of sin-soot (naturally darkening the wood), obscured the quality of the pine. It was a pleasant surprise to find clear white wood coming out of the other end of the planer.
The backs of the pews were used to build the rails and stiles, while the end treatments, complete with gold-embossed numbers, were used as the inset panels. The kitchen was designed as flush-mount, so each door had to be fit perfectly to its opening.
Scott and Jerilyn chose a pressed tin backsplash and a farm sink. For the pass-through we used the last section of the southern yellow pine Union League bowling alley. They opted for unfinished salvaged posts beneath the breakfast bar, and an Icestone countertop. We replaced the window on the north side, exposed the brick, and installed a classic cast iron wall radiator.
And finally, bin pulls for the drawers, for easy access to the J.A. Henkels knives. We're all still waiting for the dinner invitation.
