St. Joseph's Prep Salvage

St. Joseph's Prep & Center City

Clients near in Center City were interested in harvesting close to a thousand feet of original three-piece baseboard, 1500 feet of window and door casement, twenty walnut doors, twenty walnut door jambs, marble lavatory dividers, and all original hardware. The Jesuit Seminary at St. Josephs's Prep was the place to do this.

Coordinating with Bob Beatty and his crew at Provenance, we spent a week and a half at the seminary pulling the salvage. As might be expected of a seminary, no compromise was made in craftsmanship. In fact, where finish carpenters had tried to copy the walnut baseboard, they had failed miserably. Hence we did our best to harvest quickly and carefully, avoiding pieces the demolition company had so delicately spray-painted.

The salvage architecture was de-nailed, marked, bundled and loaded in trucks and taken to its new home (photo below). The door jambs, built for thicker walls, were matched when they could with their partner doors, and set aside to be ripped down. The doors – all with original brass or wood hardware – will be set throughout the house. The marble will be used for foyer steps, while the casement will be cleaned and re-used.
